Picture Saturday-- B&W

This is actually being posted on Saturday.

How novel.

Anyway, I'm here to tell you right now, that I was not in the mood to color this week, so we have a load of black and white, and I hope that's okay with y'all.

Sometimes it's just easier to stick with my pens and pencils. And I'm best with black and white, sometimes I feel like my color drawings are a bit.... how can I say... garish. I don't like garish..... Hmm. What do you think?

I wish mechanical pencils came with brown lead, because I want to start drawing in sepia tones, but it's hard for me to use regular pencils because they loose their sharp points really fast and it freaks me out.

I really like my pencils to stay sharp.

I also want to try digital art, but as far as I can tell, free programs are not the thing, and people recommend Photoshop or... or a different one I forget the name of. But I cannot afford Photoshop and it makes me sad. #brokepeopleproblems

Right so let's get on with it, shall we?

1.) Sometimes I draw guys holding girls and laughing because love is awesome.

Do I think big, chunky glasses are attractive? Why yes. Yes I do.

2.) Sometimes I draw different poses of guys holding girls and laughing.

3.) Sometimes I draw scary hair. Mostly because I saw a picture on pinterest and wondered if I could... draw it.

4.) Sometimes I draw kisses.

5.) Sometimes I use my previous drawings as references for bigger pictures. (To be colored when I'm not sad that I misread the deadline for an art contest.)

6.) Sometimes I draw Lucy Carlyle from Lockwood & Co.... And discovered that I really like the effect of super dark eyes and thick eyebrows.

7.) Sometimes I draw Anthony Lockwood because hawt. (Also because I just finished the third book of the series and YEAH OKAY, INTENSE, AND A LITTLE BIT CREEPY.)

8.) Sometimes I draw people getting walloped with a snowball because it's almost December.

I did not draw Tristan and gang this week, because they're still insisting that Max do the Thing. I do not want Max to do the Thing, so they aren't going to be drawn until, A.) Max decides not to do the thing, B.) Max gives me a really good reason why he should do the Thing, or, C.) Max figures out a way to do the Thing without making the entire gang and the whole world hate him.

Now that Thanksgiving has passed, I feel I can listen to Christmas music and it makes me so happy. You have no idea how hard it was for me to wait until Thanksgiving. This year, I don't know what it is, but I was ready for Christmas by like... October.

I want to get candy canes and go caroling when it's like two days 'til Christmas.

You guys should give me ideas for Christmas cards because every time I sit down to draw one, I get art blocked.

FYI, the Mary Poppins we went to see last week was stellar. So unbelievable good, I'm a Broadway snob, and I think the talent in the show was definitely good enough to be on Broadway. *dies* So good.

Anyway, how are all you lovely people?

I found a new artist on pinterest that I adore, and when I finish this post, I'm going to find everything she has ever drawn and pin it. (All while probably crying that I'm not even sort of that good. Like seriously, look.)

Mkay, question time.

Favorite drawing this week?
If you could pick one of the above for me to color, which would it be?
You should give me ideas for Christmas cards.
Seriously. I need ideas.
Have you read "Lockwood & Co"?

Alrighty! I must go. I love you all!

  2. I like the guy holding the girl one, because I'm in a bit of a romantic mood lately. And the Lookwood ones. Makes me want to read the book.

Would it make you feel better to know I honestly thought the last one looked like one of yours and wouldn't have realized it wasn't if you hadn't told me?

  3. YAYYYYYYYYYYYYY DRAWINGS ARE MAH FAVORITEEEEEEEEE ALL DA ART.

Also your colored work does not look garish, it looks incredible, so there. *humph*

Favorite drawing this week? THE SNOWBALL ONE BECAUSE IT REMINDED ME OF SUSIE FROM CALVIN AND HOBBES ALL GROWN UP AND IT MADE ME HAPPY.

If you could pick one of the above for me to color, which would it be? THE SNOWBALL ONE :-D Or the one that had the guy holding the girl in the forest because adorables.

You should give me ideas for Christmas cards. Hmm. You could draw Jack Frost on a telephone wire and say, "The lines were down, so I had to send a card" or something. Or you could draw the shepherds running through the streets to see baby Jesus. Or you could illustrate O Come, O Come Emmanuel. Or something like that. :-)

Seriously. I need ideas. Well you could draw carolers. Like you and your family being carolers. Though I don't know if you'd all fit on a card. Maybe just Toink. XD Or you could draw Joseph holding baby Jesus because for some reason nobody does him holding Jesus though I'm sure in actuality he did. Or you could draw someone with hot chocolate and the smoke spells Merry Christmas.

Have you read "Lockwood & Co"? I have not even heard of it. What's it like???

Can't handle all da love for these drawings, my friend. Stop comparing yourself to these other people because you are an amazing artist.

(but I get it. I read books by N.D. Wilson and I'm like *shame never write again shame*)

    1. AAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW YIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSS.

Aw. Thanks. I think you're a little biased, but okay. :)

OH MY GOODNESS IT DOES LOOK LIKE THAT. NOW I WANT TO DRAW GROWN UP CALVIN AND SUSIE CAUSE YES.

I'm going to color the one in the forest for sure, but I don't know if I want to touch the snowball one, because it's kind of perfect as is.

I do appreciate your ideas. XD BUT OH OH THE SHEPHERDS. Have you heard Veni Emmanuel that was arranged by Anne Dudley? YOU SHOULD LOOK IT UP. IT'S PRETTIFUL.

I could also do carolers. (But you're right, I prolly couldn't fit us all on a card, unless it was a big card, and I had ninja powers. OH WAIT.) I KNOW! No one EVER does Saint Joseph holding Baby Jesus, what's with that? Also the chocolate idea is good.

Weelll.... it's kind of fantasyish. But it's a parallel world, where, for some reason they have a problem with ghosts. Just like... lots and lots of hauntings. But younger kids are the only ones who can actually *see* the ghosts and it's kind of about... ghost hunters. Like they have rapiers and salt and they take out the ghosts. And SOMETIMES IT CAN GET REALLY CREEPY. But sometimes it feels kind of Victorian... even though I think it's actually current time. But Lockwood is very cool and clever, and I don't hate Lucy, which is novel, and... I really appreciate how he doesn't bring God into it, because in my experience, with ghost stories, especially in Young Adult, if they bring God into it, they make Him out to be some horrid thing and it ticks me off. BUT HE DOESN'T. Plus, they're funny, so there's that.

I'm not really *comparing*, so much as seeing how much work I need to do to be that *good*. I like my style, but not all my people are proportioned that well. SO I like to peer at other people's art and learn from it.

BUT SEE YOU DO IT TOO.

RIGHT, RIGHT????? I LOVE HOW SHE TURNED OUT. HAVE YOU READ LOCKWOOD AND CO? CAUSE YOU SHOULD READ LOCKWOOD AND CO.

  5. Excellent artwork! Favorite drawing would be the picture of Lockwood because I love the sword and the coat, just the whole 19th century gentleman look. (And if I misread the costume, whoops. I haven't read Lockwood & Co. :-) ) I also love the picture of the girl getting whapped by a snowball--her expression and the flowing lines are awesome! It really is hard to pick one favorite...
    Picture to color? Definitely Lockwood.
Here's a card idea: a lamppost in the snow with greenery draped around the pole. Also, have you considered snapping pictures of Christmas objects or settings for reference?--such as the front-door wreath, the ornaments on the tree, cookies, stuff like that. That's what I tend to do, although I draw some out of my imagination as well. Christmas cards are fun to make!

    1. Aw thaaaaaaaaaaaanks. Lockwood is AWESOME. (Thanks, I was going for the 19th century gentleman look) I honestly can't tell what time frame it's supposed to be in.... which both alarms me and makes me very happy. XD
I love it when people say that my art is flowing, because I TRY FOR THAT and I have such a hard time with stiffness. XD

      Lockwood then. Okay. XD

Oh oh oh. Lamppost. Very good. I *have* considered, but I'm not very good at copying from real life, and it frustrates me. I suppose I could try that and just use it for *ideas* though. :) Christmas cards are the BEST.

  6. Nice! I like number 2 best. :) I wish I could draw so well, but most of the people in my drawings end up looking stiff or disproportionate. Lets not even talk about animals! Oh Well! I guess I just wasn't meant to be an artist... :)

    1. Aw thank you! Ehem. *scrolls back up* OOOH 2. XD That one turned out well. :)
Oh you draw???? Can I.... *seeee*? (As for stiffness, someone once told me never to do a completely straight line when you're drawing, always add curves or swoopiness. That actually helps with stiffness. :) Disproportionate people are the most frustrating little.... Grrrrr. I feel ya. I really do.

Haha! I can't do animals either *fist bump*

Well don't give up, maybe you just haven't figured out what you *like* to draw yet. :)

    2. Yeah, number 2 is really cute. :) Yes, I draw! Sure! You can just go to my blog Drawing On A Whim, ( here's the URL, http://novasdrawings.blogspot.com/), and you can see some of my drawings. :)
Thanks for the tips! I'll try that! :)
Yeah, my animals are just... yeah.

  9. Favorite drawing this week?-#5. I love the full background, and the people look so happy.
If you could pick one of the above for me to color, which would it be?- #7, because I want his coat to be red. I'm not sure why.
You should give me ideas for Christmas cards. - When I'm at a loss I draw scribble-trees. Scribble-trees on little rocky islands. But in this case maybe it should be scribble-trees in a snowy field.
Seriously. I need ideas. - or you could draw carolers. Or a historically and culturally accurate manger scene. (MUST be historically and culturally accurate! It drives me crazy seeing otherwise!... sorry, I get carried away when it comes to this sort of thing.)
Have you read "Lockwood & Co"?- No. It looks cool, but for the ghosts. Ghosts annoy me.

    1. That one's probably my favorite too. That one or the Lockwood and Co ones. :) (I'M SO GLAD THEY LOOK HAPPY, do you know how many times I erased their stupid faces!??)
haha, well.... his coat is dark in the book. So.. *blinks at you*
OH I COULD SCRIBBLE CHRISTMAS TREES. OH OH.
Erm. WELL I was *going* to do a manger scene (you're the only other person besides us who calls it that, btw *fist bump* Everyone else calls it Nativity Scene and looks blank when I say manger.) BUT NOW I'M AFRAID BECAUSE I DON'T DO CULTURE AND HISTORICAL VERY WELL, OH NO! But I'll do my best so don't hate me. XD

*Dies a little* IT"S SO GOOD. Why do ghost annoy?

      Delete
    2. The happiness shows in more than that, which is a good thing for an artist.
      Hm...dark red?
Here's what makes a good manger scene in my books: 1) No pigs. I don't know why I see pigs so often. 2) No magi. Apparently they didn't come until much later. 3) Jesus should look like a newborn, newborns don't have teeth and not a lot of baby pudge yet.
But if all that's too fussy, I only ask for Jesus.

I just don't like ghosts portrayed as something fun and exciting. There's personal reasons behind this too, but there could be young eyes reading these posts.

      Delete
    3. *dances*

...No. Like... grey. (But you're welcome to imagine it red, that's cool. lol.)

1.) People do pigs? What!!? 2.) The Magi came when Our Lord was about 2, I think. BUT I'm going to have one of them at the crib, because a.) Their clothes are fun to draw, b.) If I draw them at the Manger, I usually inform people of the historical inaccuracies and C.) I CAN'T HELP IT, IT'S KIND OF TRADITION. But ehem. Yeah. I know they're not supposed to be there... :) I know! People draw Baby Jesus like He's two. Like, hey, 'scuse me, He was literally born like AN HOUR BEFORE.

Yeah, me neither. So it takes a lot for me to like a ghost story because they either make them unrealistic, or, like you said, fun and exciting. If it makes you feel better, these books are more like... real hauntings I guess? It's really dangerous to make them leave, and they're not *friendly*.

  10. AHHHHH RIGHT. VALIARD MANSION ARTIST IS THE BESSSSST.

  11. you're drawings here looks sepia-toned but it might just be my screen, sometimes the scan isn't always black and white even if you're scanning black and white.

I like #5, the couple is cute and I like guys with glasses, that could be color piece.

as for software, I think you can get an education discount but I don't know how that works but if you're student, you could get some some of break. also, there is Photoshop Elements which is a cheaper/lighter version of Photoshop, perhaps you can check that out.

as for christmas card ideas, I don't have any good ideas. I started making my own christmas card a few years back but this year, I've got nothing. perhaps draw ornaments or snowman with christmas lights or really, anything decorated with christmas is... christmas enough, all very sad suggestions, I suppose.

I hope you have a lovely holiday season.

    1. Well a lot of them I outlined and finished off with a brown Macro pen, so maybe that's it?? (Sometimes the scan messes stuff up, and it's like, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, SCAN RIGHT."

Yeah, I plan to color number 5, but I'm a little afraid to, because it looks good as it. ;)

I am not a student, so the education discounts don't apply to me, which is trying. lol. But Oooh, I shall look up Photoshop Elements and see if it's in my price range. Thank you!

Same here, but people have given me some really clever ideas. But not, not sad suggestions at all!! I really like the snowman and Christmas lights idea!! (I just get blocked because I love Christmas SO MUCH I want to capture the FEEL of it, and it's HARD. lol.)

I hope you do too! Cheers!

  12. Hi Treskie! I'm a new reader, but I love, love , LOVE your blog!

I think my favourites are 1 and 2, because I'm a hopeless romantic at heart and they were just lovely. I also really love the snowball one!

I've never heard of Lockwood & Co. (does that make me a terrible person?). What are the books about? Worth a read?

Also, I don't know if you do awards, but if you do, I've nominated you for the One Lovely Blog Award :-)

    1. Hey, Joanna! Awww YAY! I love new followers and new readers and people who love my blog. It makes me all fluffy inside. XD

1 and 2 seem to be the ranking favorites this week, which amuses me because their proportions are off lol. (I'm a hopeless romantic too, *high fives* The snowball one just turned out really well, I'm quite happy with it. :)

Nah, it doesn't make you a terrible person, they're not really well known. They're by the same guy who writes the Bartimaeus trilogy and... well they're worth the read to me. And if you like parallel worlds that has a problem with Ghosts appearing like no tomorrow and clever people named Anthony Lockwood (who's about 15 and owns his own ghost hunting business), and some bits that legitimately creeped me out enough to turn on extra lights, then YES I recommend them whole-heartedly. :)

Aww! I do accept awards, (I just... tend to forget about them, Like "Wow thank you! I'll save that for when I have nothing to blog about!" and then... I....forget.) BUT THANK YOU! I'll save that for when I have nothing to blog about! :)

  13. Hahah, thank you!

I PRESS HARDER, THAT'S HOW. LOL. I dunno, when I'm doing more serious stuff, I'll use art pencils, but yeah, in general, mechanical pencils are my friend. XD

    WOOT!

    Happy new year!!!
