La Viva Crista Rey!
Some things are so inspiring... And inspiring is really the only word for them.
Andy Garcia, Eva Longoria, Mouricio Kuri, and Oscar Isaac star in For Greater Glory, which is the true story of the Cristeros in Mexico in the 1920s. It is so nice to finally see the Catholic Church portrayed accurately.
The Mexican Government abruptly took the religious freedom away from the Catholics.
You take away religious freedom, people are going to get really angry and rebellious! I actually found it rather disconcerting how much it paralleled, abstractly, the way things are going today. Eerily.
Yes, it was rated R. I think that rating wasn't quite right though. PG-13, yes. R, not so much. THIS was an excellent site which explains precisely why I think that.
Most of the time when you see Catholics in movies they are generic, feel-good, and wishy-washy. While there were a few of these weak Catholics, they were not shown in a good light and were definitely looked down upon by their acquaintances. The relationship between the General of the Cristero Army and Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio was so neat, I loved them both so much. The martyrdom of Jose was absolutely, heart-wrenchingly, well done. I swear, I cried through the whole movie.
While I don't recommend this to everyone, I think it is a very good film, and I loved how everyone had a moral arc.
Therefore, my current heroes are Enrique Gorostieta Velarde...
And Jose Luis Sanchez del Rio.
I would recommend it if you can stand war violence. It was really good.
La Viva Crista Rey! Long live Christ the King!
